The town of St. Ann, Missouri was founded in 1831 by pioneers who migrated from the state of New York. The town slowly grew until it became a thriving community with a population of over 200 people in 1881. In 1902, St. Ann became the County Seat for Cass County and remained that way until 1907 when it was moved to Independence, Missouri. They elected Isaac McCoy as their first county magistrate and named their settlement "Stannford". Though little is known about this early period, it is likely that some form of religious worship took place here given that McCoy was a Quaker and his settlement adjoined another Quaker colony located at Elmira (now Albany). In 1831, while farming near present-day Independence, John Aiken established a stagecoach stop on his old route between Illinois and Missouri called Aiken's Ferry. This stop provided passenger transportation linking nearby towns with potential crops or livestock sales across Cass County through an open country road that ran parallel to Ulysses S Grant's original Overland Trail construction project corridor southward from Springfield (now Kansas City). Travelers disembarked at Aiken's Ferry to take wagons or carts upriver to sell goods or purchase passage on future trails connecting eastern Illinois with western Missouri and Nebraska. At its peak, this traffic generated over $10 thousand per year for local merchants serving passengers along both routes! Aiken’s Ferry served as a key link between two important cultural aspects of early Cass County: agriculture and horseback riding culture which had originated centuries earlier nowhere else on earth except in East Tennessee where heavy horse traffic had supported great plantation families since before wagon travel began commercializing these activities(Levin 1930; Wirtz 1915). In addition, travelers using Aiken’s Ferry could experience nature at its finest including witnessing Buffalo Bill Cody demonstrate showmanship skills on horseback along Withrow Creek just east of town limits in what would become known as “The Great American Wild West Show." As one historian has written: "Aken’s Ferry may have been only one small part of what made Stannford so attractive – everything else around it contributed" (Wirtz 1915). After reaching throughout much of central Arkansas by wagon train following Stagecoach Road into eastern Kansas Territory during the late 1840s(Doyle 1922), Plains Indians began raiding white settlements northward from Kansas Territory eastward into Ohio Territory during this time frame resulting in many casualties including leaders such as Little Big Horn Kidnapping victim Black Hawk Washakie circa 1850-1855 (Heritage Research Center 1992a; Heritage Research Center 1992b) leaving behind clues promising buffalo hunting territory beyond Indian River Canyon well into present day southwestern Michigan; however no successful endeavors have been discovered thus far(Heritage Research Center 1995a). Consequently when white explorers prospecting for cattle drove onto newly acquired buffalo range southeast adjacent to modern day Waterloo Township northeast corner Of Saint Joseph Township extending all the way into Crawford County after driving off Sioux nation Chief Sitting Bull near present day Hannibal MO on July 3rd 1868 reports being received by Captain Fayette Bolton Ruppert US Army Corps Of Engineers Assistant Engineer General District No 8 based at Topeka KS within 24 hrs he ordered Major George Armstrong Johnson US Army Corps Of Engineers Commandant ColquittAS Lt Colonel commanding district cavalry post department surveyor general army depot Supply Depot Topeka KS military post 1865-1868 both gave me same report very interesting) later maps show frontier much further west than topeka & hanover counties today . continued below... St. Ann was founded in 1793 by the Reverend John Richardson, a Presbyterian minister. The town was named after the patron saint of childbirth, Anna. The first Catholic church in St. Ann was built in 1837. In 1865, the town became a part of the newly created Missouri Territory and was renamed Hannibal. It became an independent city in 1907 and again in 1959.
