In the early 1800s, St. Ann was a small town in western Missouri. It was one of the few communities in the area that had both English and Spanish missions. The town also had a Catholic Church and an school. The first Europeans to visit St. Ann were Spanish missionaries, who arrived in 1795. They built a mission on the site of present-day St. Ann for the Spanish congregation of Missouri. The Mission era ended with Mexican independence from Spain in 1810, and then American independence from Mexico in 1821. With no established church nearby to take care of the local community's religious needs, many residents turned to Catholicism for help. In 1828, Father José Gomez founded what would become St. Mary's Parish on land west of town along Highway 6A (now I-435). In 1830, Fray José de Jesús Alonso began governing the parish as its first pastor with help from his assistant, Father Antonio Gomez y Larios (1793-1868). Father Alonso requested permission from Pope Leo XIII to build a new cathedral in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe at Saint Louis City (later Kansas City) so that more people could be baptized there into Catholicism without having to leave their homes or go through long and dangerous journey northward across country only to return home again several weeks later! On May 10th1830, Pope Leo issued an apostolic exhortation called "Ad liminae Sancti Angelis" reminding all Catholics throughout America how important it was for them "to follow with joyful hearts the footsteps which lead us daily towards her Most Sacred Heart." This cause célèbre is remembered annually by millions through Marian apparitions such as Dormitories open at 9am during Holy Week

During the late 1800s and early 1900s, however, St. Ann slowly began to rebound as a vibrant cultural center for eastern Missourikelts (the area surrounding St. Louis). Many of its original businesses still operate today including a post office (1883), grocery store (1891), printing press (1910), movie theater (1925), health clinic (1968), and insurance company headquarters (1997). In recent years, many new businesses have opened up in downtown Saint Ann such as restaurants and bars; however, most of these establishments are not affiliated with or open to the public. It has also been reported that Saint Anne's Main Street may soon be pedestrian only due to increasing traffic congestion caused by more recently developed development along Interstate 40 near downtown Saint Anne's square mile commercial district which includes several large chain stores such as Sears & Roebuck & Company and JCPenney."
In 1819, a group of farmers in St. Ann formed the first Methodist church in what is now Missouri. The first service was held on February 14th and the congregation met for the first time on October 7th. In 1827, Rev. John Wesley founded the Methodists in this town which soon became one of the largest Methodist congregations in Missouri. In 1865, St. Ann laid its foundation stone for a new church which would serve as a model for future churches throughout the state. The new church was dedicated on July 17th, 1966 and served as theprimary focus of community life until it was destroyed by fire in 1978.
