In 1817, a group of wealthy fur traders in what is now St. Ann, Missouri decided to settle in the area and name their new town after the patron saint of travelers and missionaries, St. Ann. The settlement grew quickly and soon had a population of around 100 people. The first settler in the town was Nicholas Lamar who arrived in 1819. By 1830, the town had a population of 350 people and it began to grow rapidly due to its fertile soil and easy access to water resources. In 1834, the first Catholic church was built in the town and by 1840, there were five Catholic churches located in St. Ann. In 1850, St. Ann became an election precinct for Missouri’s 3rd congressional district which included parts of present-day St. Louis County as well as parts of Kansas City County (later Kansas). However, by 1861 when Missouri seceded from the United States, all vestiges of local government were gone and the town reverted back to Indian Territory status under Ulysses S. Grant’s Reconstruction Plan which lasted until 1865 when it finally regained full statehood under Governor John Crainois with a population of 710 people The growing city slowly lost its importance until World War II when it saw significant growth due to military activity on the nearby Mississippi Riverfront which created jobs for locals during wartime
In 1821, the first permanent settler in St. Ann was Nicholas Fenton. A few years later, a company of Mormons set out from Nauvoo, Illinois, and arrived in what is now St. Ann County on April 6, 1825. The Mormons began to build their own settlements and churches in the area soon after they arrived. In 1830, when Missouri became a state, St. Ann was one of the initial counties added to its boundaries.
