Saint Ann's Parish, located in the town of St. Ann, was established in 1845. The first pastor was Father John A. Fitzpatrick and the parish had a membership of just nine people. In 1851, Father Fitzpatrick moved to what is now Independence, Missouri and the parish grew rapidly with new members joining at an average rate of two per year. In 1865, Father Fitzpatrick served as bishop of Springfield, Illinois and Saint Ann's Parish became part of that diocese. In 1896, the cornerstone for the current church was laid and it opened its doors to worshippers on December 1st, 1896. The original church had a capacity of only fifty-six people but it quickly became one of Saint Ann's most popular destinations with an attendance figure ranging from one hundred to two thousand every week during its busiest times. The present day basilica has been built over a period spanning over sixty years and includes a number of features unique to this type of construction such as four large stained glass windows each measuring thirty feet by forty feet and each depicting scenes from the life of Christ including his birth, Crucifixion, ascension into heaven and resurrection; as well as three smaller windows which show scenes from Saints Bartholomew (the Apostle), James (the Just) and Simon Magus (a rival preacher who attempted to purchase Jesus' body). The interior also features a large rose window which overlooks main thoroughfare in downtown St. Ann; eleven Corinthian columns supporting an elaborate entablature support twenty-one domes extending across nearly two acres; six massive marble baptismal fonts dating back to 1872 are also among many highlights inside or outside the basilica itself. Today Saint Ann's Parish continues to thrive with an attendance figure greater than one thousand individuals each week - making it one of Missouri's most popular religious institutions!
In 1837, St. Ann's parish was founded by Father John McLaughlin and named in honor of the Virgin Mary. The first church on the site was built in a Spanish style and consecrated on November 10, 1838. In 1861, the parish became part of the Missouri Synod of the Episcopal Church and changed its name to St. Ann’s Parish in honor of Queen Victoria. In 1934, following World War II, St. Ann’s Parish merged with neighboring First United Methodist Church to form one large congregation with a population of over 1,000 people. On September 16, 2008, as part of Holy Week celebrations at St. Ann's Parish property, a new $5 million temple was dedicated to serve as the parish center for all its worship services throughout Central Missouri until a new church is built on Park Avenue in Springfield Township adjacent to Interstate 44/I-435 from which services will be offered radial out across all three parishes' properties (St. James Anglican Church - Northeast), Resurrection Lutheran - Southeast corner lot #3 & 4 & 5 - Southwest corner lot #1 & 2 - Northwest corner lot #4; and Our Lady Of Sorrows Catholic Chapel located at Eastern edge of town near Kelly Ford Dam - Northwest corner lot #2).
