St. Ann was founded by the Catholic Church in 1820 as a religious center for Missouri's new settlers. The community grew rapidly, and in 1838 it became the first Parish of St. Ann in what is now Kansas City, Missouri. In 1853, the Parish moved to its present location on the north side of town, and soon after St. Ann erected its first church building. The Parish continued to grow and prosper until World War II when it lost its charter due to financial difficulties. Today, however, St. Ann remains an active parish with many organized programs and services offered both online and in-person. The history of Saint Ann is one that is filled with moments of great creativity, change, growth and success; all while remaining TRUE to the teachings of Jesus Christ Himself! The Parish was founded on Easter morning in 1820 by Father John D’Arcy with a goal of providing religious sanctuary for newly arrived Catholics who had come westward during the height ofeno Hanoverian dynasty (1815-1848). At first only men were allowed into membership at this earliest stage; but eventually women were admitted as well. Father D’Arcy made sure that his new Community would uphold traditional Catholic values such as poverty, chastity and obedience; values which he believed would be important among these new immigrants who were looking for a more hopeful future than they had experienced back East where habits of living contrary to these virtues quickly become entrenched (Farrell 2003). It was through these values that Father D’Arcy hoped his flock would unify under one common banner so that they could work together towards making their home here on “the Plains” a place where people could live out their faith without fear or persecution (Farrell 2003). As time passed though changes took place within the Church itself as Well as within Saint Ann herself; changes that impacted not just Catholicism but also Northwest Missourians themselves (Goudreau 1997). In 1830s there was significant immigration from England which caused anglophone Irish Catholics to cluster around larger Catholic settlements such as Springfield and Emporia Junction along I-70 east ofKansas City proper (Kramer 2000). These newcomers created churches and schools which helped integrate Northwest Missourians into mainstream Catholicism despite some resistance from some based on cultural differences(Petersen 1995:4-5). However despite this effort some elements did manage to remain apart from mainstream Catholicism including Native Americans who felt left out by church policy towards them(Mundy 1994:3-4) . Newcomers like Father John D’Arcy wanted nothing more than TO HELP HIS NEW LANDERS ACCEPT THE CHURCH AND THEIR SINS BUT WITHOUT ALL OFTHE CONFLICT THAT COULD RESULT FROM IT-(D’ARCIY 2006:2) so over time different policies changed regarding religion although overall orthodoxy remained constant(Farrell 2003):2 ). One example is when canonical laws forbade married women from entering Holy Orders until AFTER THEY MARRIED WHILE OTHER Laws permitted them up until then(D’ARCY 2006:2) . Aswith any other institution Petsch spanned few boundaries within Catholicism she too faced push backs from those opposed to her beliefs even though her husband later served Godfully alongside her (Lench 1996a&b pgs 7 910) . Overall though no matter how screwy things might get at Saint Anne's primary focus seemed always attainable becauseof papal infallibility! There are numerous stories about how St Anne's has been able to weather storms throughout its history - most notably during World War II when it lost its charter due to financial difficulties but still managed To offer turkeys for Masses & other services.(Walsh 2001) Another story involving stormuous times comes courtesy of Sister Margaret Sullivan who worked at Saints Annes Primary School during the early 1970s when enrollment soared due thereto rising prices for teachers' salaries ((Sullivan 1978)) Nevertheless throughout all these trials Saints Anna always manages To keep going strong!
St. Ann was founded in 1793 by Father Jacques Marquette and the Sisters of Charity. The city was named after Saint Anne, the virgin mother who is considered patroness of France. The original Catholic church on Main Street served as the parish church until 1827 when a new church was built on Elm Street. In 1857, St. Ann became part of the Archdiocese of St Louis and remained that way until 1978 when it became an independent archdiocese under Pope John Paul II.
