St. Ann was a small town in Missouri during the 1800s. It was located on the east bank of the Kansas River, about six miles north of Topeka. The population in 1810 was only ninety-six people. But by 1840, St. Ann had grown to 1,200 residents and had become an important commercial center for the region. After being burned down by Union troops during the Civil War, St. Ann slowly recovered and experienced a period of growth that continued until its incorporation into Topeka as a city in 1907. During its heyday, St. Ann boasted a large grocery store, three churches and several businesses including a millinery shop and bakery. However, it is now little more than an abandoned ghost town with few remaining structures from its once bustling community life.
The first settlement on the area now known as St. Ann was made in 1809 by Captain James K. Polk and his wife, Rachel. The name of the town was chosen to honor Saint Anne, an early Christian martyr who was executed in Rome around 310 AD. The first post office in the town was established in 1812. In 1824, St. Ann became a county seat of Lee County. In 1836, it became a part of Putnam County and again in 1840 when it became a part of St. Francois County. In 1860, Missouri created a new district called Steele County within Putnam County which included all of what is now St. Ann County as well as parts of Lee and Putnam Counties to the east and west respectively In 1870, after Missouri's admission into the Union as a state,St Steele Countys merged with Putnam and Lee Counties to form Independence Township In 1902, after Independence Township lost its separate government status within Independence Township but continued to be governed by its own rules and regulations than those governing other municipalities within Independence Township (the "Mayoralty Rule"), it became part of newly formed Jefferson City Municipal District
