Springfield, Missouri is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri. The population was 19,651 at the 2010 census and was projected to grow to 24,912 by 2015. Springfield is the county seat of St. Louis County and is the cultural and economic center for the metropolitan area that includes STL (the largest city in Missouri). It has been home to several of America's most famous companies including Monsanto, Microsoft, KFC and Coca-Cola. The first permanent settler in Springfield was Nathan Hale who founded a small community on what is now known as Hale Place in 1786. The City of Springfield was incorporated on February 15, 1820 from parts of adjoining Scott County.[2] On July 1, 1825 it became a part of St. Louis County when all of Saint Francois Parish within modern-day St. Louis were annexed into the new county.[3] In 1838 an act were passed by the Legislature providing for a public school system in Scott County which also included Springfield; this school board met at Union Hall on East Market Street where present day Park Plaza stands today[4]. When Scott County joined with Ferguson County to form Saint Louis County in 1846 all schools within Scott County were closed and moved to Ferguson Township so that students could attend the newly created public schools there – this action remains one of history’s earliest examples of suburbanization in America[5]. In 1865 President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 998 order disbanding both local militias and creating a centralized Military District Court System throughout “all Territories acquired since our independence” including Springfield; this order had far-reaching results due to its peacetime nature[6][7]. The central courthouse located at 309 E Jefferson Avenue served as the courtroom for Military District Courts until it burned down on January 3, 1908,[8][9] but continued serving as office space for various Municipal Court judges until it too burned down on April 30th 1975[10]. This courthouse still stands vacant today but portions have been used as apartments/condos/residential buildings etc… over time it has come to be known locally as “The White House” or simply “The White House” because no efforts have been made by anyone ever since to renovate or move it back into use as a courthouse[11][12][13]; interestingly enough during renovations inside recently gutted section thereof which had formerly served as Legislative Chambers two weeks ago [14], then Mayor Sly James announced his intent to place an American flagpole near front entrance(s) next year given current condition thereof) In addition thereto substantial alterations will also be made insideroomsof both Main Street Jail & Mechanics Building adjacent thereto [15], latter being designated presentlyfor future usebyMissouri State Highway Patrol Station currently located therein…. effective dates thereof appear yettobe scheduled
In 1831, Springfield was the capital of the Missouri Territory. In 1835, it became the capital of the United States when Missouri became a state.
