On July 25, 1829, Springfield became an independent city under the name of City of Springfield; it received its charter from Governor Andrew Johnson on October 17, 1829. The economy has been based mainly on agriculture since early days but also includes manufacturing (especially finished goods) and some services such as accounting and health care until recently. In recent years much investment has gone into green energy technology which has helped to revitalize downtown streetscape as well as creating jobs in new industries such as information technology and clean energy development
The first white people to live in Springfield were the Haudenosaunee nation, who arrived in 1768. The area was originally part of the Mississippian culture and was known as Moccasin Bend because of the abundance of moccasins (a type of footwear) found there. In 1819, a group of English settlers called Easton moved to what is now west Springfield. They began trading with Native Americans and built roads and houses. In 1825, they founded the town of Easton on land that they had bought from the Haudenosaunee nation. The town grew rapidly and by 1830, it had a population of over 100 people. In 1837, Springfield became an independent city under the government control of the Missouri Territory. In 1850, it became a state capital when Missouri became a United States territory.
