Salem, Missouri is a town in Ozarks County, Missouri, United States. The population was 4,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in Salem was made on the north side of the Arkansas River by two families from Independence, Kentucky who arrived in 1837. The name "Salem" originated with Captain John Salter who built a trading post there in 1840. A post office called Salem was established in 1847, and remained in operation until it burned down in 1870. In 1861, General James K. Polk ordered Colonel David Hunter to take command of an army moving towards Vandalia to relieve that city after Confederate forces had besieged it for three weeks. When Hunter reached Vandalia on July 29th he found that Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest had withdrawn his troops and taken shelter within the city limits under the protection of Mayor Uriah Hebert and Councilman Jno.[1] With Hood's Texas Army now threatening to overrun Vandalia if Polk did not move quickly, Hunter ordered him to withdraw his forces back into Springfield so that they could be destroyed before reaching Corinth on August 2nd - thereby saving Corinth from Confederate occupation and allowing Union troops under Major-General John Pemberton to enter into that city unopposed on August 3rd. Aftermath of Battle of Corinth: 400 dead Yankees & 800 Confederates [2] In 1865 Springfield became an open field during the American Civil War as Union cavalrymen pursued Confederates retreating through what is now Springfield Avenue south from Jefferson Boulevard eastward; this pursuit ended when Confederate cavalry commander Colored Troops retreated behind a plantation house which served as their own mountaintop fortress against advancing Union cavalrymen while residents hid inside; eventually one observer estimated that more than 1,000 horses were killed or wounded during this engagement [3]. On November 10th 1865 General Ulysses S Grant arrived at Springfield Armory where he inspected new artillery pieces being produced by Colonel Samuel Colt; upon leaving Armory he noted several homes surrounding Elmira Road which were recently acquired by Samuel Colt and his wife Lucretia (the Colt family later donated $10 million dollars (the equivalent of $ present day) to help fund cancer research at Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences). Aftermath: 400 dead Yankees & 800 Confederates [4] At this time much progress had been made for women during Reconstruction such as voting rights granted to women on October 15th 1865 when President Abraham Lincoln signed An Act for Regulating Commerce with Foreign Nations; however due to lack of funds various Unions failed to provide proper infrastructure such as schools for black Americans or better transportation systems like roadsides clean enough for vehicles [5]. As spring began arriving Salem saw its first real influx of white people since reconstruction had ended - some 25 families moved into the town between 1871 and 1875 primarily because opportunities opened up following railroads coming through Springfield including both Northern Illinois Railroad Company line going northwest via Osage Hills westward past towns like Pawnee City then continuing east past Hannibal then south along I-55 until it reached St. Louis; meanwhile many African Americans left town because they could not find work other than aroundSpringfield where they worked as slaves [6]. In 1886 local politician George Hahn purchased 202 acres (or about 6 square miles) adjacent to downtown Springfield known today as Forest Park which would become home to many cultural institutions including Northwestern Missouri State University (now UIUC), National Museum Of American History,[7] US Military Academy West Point[8], etc.; due to its location just outside downtown Springfield's boundaries most social events took place at Forest Park rather than downtown where access limitations prevented most people from attending [] However despite all these positive changes little progress was made towards solving problems brought about by World War II such as unsolved housing shortages or milk production failures [] Finally throughout much recent history there has been occasional talk about redeveloping Forest Park but no action has ever been taken []; Today Salem remains a small community with strong ties located near Columbia MO

Springfield is a town in Douglas County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Branson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1836 by English immigrants and named after General James K. Polk, who was then the U.S. Minister to Spain. Springfield was originally a small village with about 120 residents and four businesses when it became a municipality in 1854. In 1904, the city limits were enlarged to include present day Springfield Township as well as parts of Wabash Township and Union Township east of Interstate 30 and north of Interstate 70. The city annexed those townships in 1907, making Springfield an official city but ending its role as a village until 1959 when it again become an official city under the new name of Springfield Mayor Richard Moulder (1912–1977). The first permanent settler in what would later be called Springfield was Captain John Cook on February 14, 1836, when he landed his ship " Discovery" on what is now Main Street near the current intersection of North Maple and South Elm Streets. Cook's party consisted of five men: two men cook, one man carpenter/builder and three women passengers or “mothers” traveling with their children (the youngest being just six months old). Cook built a log cabin which he named "New Beginnings." He also planted corn for his own use and sold bread from his house to passers-by for 3¢ per pound early in this century according to local historian Jerald Hilliard's book "The Birthplace Of Our City". On July 2d 1837 Captain Cook's wife Anna died after giving birth to her second son Samuel alias Johnathan Cook Jr., within three days after she had arrived at New Beginnings from Savannah Georgia aboard HMS Bounty under Captains William Bligh & James Cook III with her brother Joseph Banks & others including Lt.-Cdr David Ralston commanding HMS Beagle which had discovered Australia Cove on July 4th 1770 during Operation Anzac only 8 days earlier! Samual Cook survived infancy but spent 9 years away from home...he finally returned home on October 10th 1846 living next door to Captains Hickey & Griggs (now Pigeon Forge) while still serving aboard USS Constitution during the American Civil War!
