Springfield was founded in 1836 by Captain James K. Polk, who homesteaded land on the west side of the Missouri River. The city was named after Springfield, Massachusetts, where Polk had been born. In 1840, Springfield became the county seat of Webster County and a part of the Kansas Territory. The city's population increased rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s due to its location on the new state line between Missouri and Kansas. During the American Civil War, Springfield acted as a transportation hub for Union forces moving across Missouri into Kansas. After Confederate troops destroyed several bridges in downtown Springfield on November 15, 1862, Union General Ulysses S. Grant moved his army into town to cut off rebel supplies and reinforcements. On January 3, 1863, Grant ordered Major-General David Hunter to occupy Springfield following an outbreak of fighting near Independence Heights outside of town. After taking control of the city from Confederate forces, Hunter issued an order stating that "No woman or child shall be molested" while he ran it "on military lines." In 1865, following their victory over General Ulysses S. Grant at Battle of Corinth (October 6), Abraham Lincoln is said to have remarked about Springfield: "It is not my intention to return until I have seen this place sacked." In 1870–71, when sectionalism developing in America led to violence throughout much of southern Illinois caused militia units called out by local farmers against black residents in what became known as Black Hawk War – an event which left more than 120 people dead – many residents fled northward towards St Louis with their belongings before finally returning home just prior to general elections held in April 71 under Reconstruction laws enacted following the Civil War ended two years earlier with African Americans enjoying full civil rights only within their own states rather than national Lincolns' Democratic Party strongholds like Illinois). The population reached 30,000 by 1880 but declined thereafter due largely to heavy European immigration after 1881; most notably through Polish immigrants who arrived beginning around 1880 and continued until World War II; although some Irish also came through during this time period too (the first wave arriving around 1885). The last major spike in population occurred during World War II when almost 40% percent of all wartime workers coming through Springfields were Polish nationals; despite efforts by local resident John McCain Sr., president George H.W Bush vetoed any bill supporting Polish refugees coming into America because he felt they constituted a threat both nationally and sectorally (see also: The Invasion Myth). Officially recorded peak populations were 54,724 in 1940 census enumeration list; however unofficially estimated estimates ranging from 50-100 thousand persons may exist without any accurate data sources available today given present day animosity towards Poles living among various American communities specifically within those communities’ respective political boundaries particularly since establishment of Poland as an independent country located primarily eastward along Interstate 435 corridor adjacent to Cedar Rapids Iowa); one such example being downtown St Louis metropolitan area which now includes portions directly south/west thereof including parts now included within Warsaw Township covering approximately 8 square miles or roughly 20% thereof historically comprising much smallerPolish rural community situat
The town of Springfield, Missouri was founded in 1837 by John C. Frary and his family. The town grew rapidly due to the opening of the Missouri Central Railroad in 1849, and by 1860, Springfield had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1868, the town became a district of St. Louis County, Missouri. The district was disbanded in 1904 and its lands were combined with those of neighboring towns to form the city of Springfield.
