Springfield, Missouri is a town in the Ozarks region of southwest Missouri, United States. The population was 34,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Auburn, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1831 by Boone and Campbell settlers from Kentucky as a small community on the high ground between Cairo and Ashburnett Counties in what is now Webster County. On November 8, 1836, Springfield was made an incorporated village with a population of 100. In 1838 it became an unincorporated community when the post office moved to nearby Cairo. It regained its status as an incorporated Village on March 1, 1912. In 1865 Springfield's first school opened under teacher John Fenton; it closed two years later because of financial difficulties caused by Union occupation during the American Civil War. A new school building was erected in 1870 and remained in use until 1918 when it burned down; however, reconstruction did not begin until after World War II due to lack of funds. In 1959-1960 a $10 million bond issue for capital improvements funded many new buildings including a library and senior citizen cottage complex which are still standing today. On July 15, 2017 President Trump signalled his intent to withdraw from both NAFTA and CAFTA which would have hit Springfield hard economically especially since much of its manufacturing has been left behind in Mexico City while job growth has stalled there

Springfield, Missouri is a town in the U.S. state of Missouri. The population was 21,527 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Platte County and was formed as a city on November 3, 1871, from parts of Harper County. It has since shrunk to its current size and population. Springfield is one of eleven cities in the St Louis metropolitan area and ranks as the eighth-largest city in Missouri by population within that area. The history of Springfield can be traced back to 1798 when Captain James Wilkinson founded a trading post on the east side of present day Springfield near present day Megargee Creek. The post served as an important center for trade with Native Americans and other settlers following Northwest Passage discovery by Pierre Chouteau and his men in 1799-1800. After Wilkinson's death in 1809, his heirs sold claim to two others who developed it into what is now Springfield: Elijah Butterfield (1810-1892) who donated land for a courthouse and school system; and Isaac Stevens (1812-1893) who built three stores and two churches on State Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue downtown. In 1821, Stephens partnered with Ebenezer Cook to build Cook & Stephens Lumber Company which became one of America's largest lumber companies before folding in 1902 due to company financial troubles along with many other small businesses during the Panic of 1907 which led to economic depression across much of America concurrent with Sullivan's Rebellion throughout most eastern United States In 1871, after years of debate among residents over whether or not they should form a city, City Council voted 7-1 in favorability towards forming a new city based on Its location within farmland accessible by wagon road from Harper County - making it one of just four townships created within St Louis County during this time period On November 3rd, 1871, Springfield became an official city after passage by City Council moved forward despite objections from some opponents including those associated with Harper County who felt their township would be taken away if Springfield were established It took until 1893 for median income levels to exceed $25 per week so that people could afford decent housing In 1903, investments made by J P Morgan saved St Louis Trust Company from collapse which led to increased development throughout STL including several highrise buildings such as Federal Reserve Building located on Peabody Place today while also creating major streets like Olive Boulevard which runs through downtown spine today becoming known as “The Loop”
The town of Springfield was established in 1826, and quickly became a center for commerce. The town's first store was built on the corner of High and Market Streets. In the 1830s, Springfield began to grow as a commercial center due to its location near the Illinois state line and its access to surveyors and land buyers. By 1840, Springfield had become one of the most important cities in Missouri. The city's growth continued through the 1850s, 1960s, and 1970s; during this time, it grew from an agricultural town with a population of around 1,000 to an important metropolis with a population of over 20,000. In 2000, Springfield became one of 25 communities in Missouri designated as " Communities For All" by Governor Mel Carnahan.
