In 1935 Standard Oil opened a refinery here producing gasoline tanks and other automotive parts ; this facility continues production today under various names including Nexen Energy Inc., ShellUSA Refining & Trading Co., Plains Alloys Incorporated
The city of Springfield, Missouri was founded in 1836 by a group of farmers who named their new town after the then-virginia capital, Richmond. The first settlers were families from Virginia and Maryland, and they built log cabins and began to cultivate land. In 1840, the community had only a few dozen residents; but within five years, it hadgrown to more than two thousand people. By 1848, Springfield had become an important center for trade and manufacturing in central Missouri. It also became a political powerhouse due to its status as the state capital. In the early 1800s, Springfield was home to numerous Native American settlements that contributed to its cultural diversity. In 1836, members of the Osage Nation living in present-day Jefferson County came into contact with white settlers and developed friendly relations until they were attacked by Indian raiders in 1838. This event is commonly known as the Battle of Springfield. After this attack, many Buffalos left what is now Springfield for other parts of Missouri because life there was too hazardous for them. In 1840, when Kansas Territory was organized into states (instead of being divided among multiple territories), Springfield became one of four cities located in that territory: Topeka; Council Bluffs; and Wichita Falls (which later merged with Fort Worth). As Topeka grew increasingly powerful politically and economically due to its location at the crossroads between Kansas Territory and Texas Settlement on the American Western Frontier (Mormon pioneers had come through Topeka during their trek westward), Wichita Falls gradually lost influence. However, Springfield remained an important economic center well into the 21st century thanks to its booming real estate industry.
