The Springfield Armory was founded in 1836 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and John H. Brown. It became a part of the American Armory Company in 1857, which merged with Colt’s Manufacturing Company in 1868. The company produced automatic firearms and machineguns until it closed its doors in 1903. In 1898, Springfield Armory began producing handguns under the name “Springfield Automatic Pistol” (SAP). This handgun was designed by Adolphus Busch and manufactured by the armory until 1911 when it was replaced by the Model 1911 pistol design. The Model 1911 pistols were used as service rifles during World War I while also being postwar production guns for many law enforcement agencies throughout North America. After World War I, Springfield Armory reverted to handguns production once again before closing its doors once again in 1953. In 1836, General James Kinsley decided to move his headquarters from St Louis to Springfield due to concerns about potential Indian attacks there. He named it after himself and also gave it land for a courthouse and other public buildings. When he died in 1840, his widow donated all of her husband's holdings in Springfield east of Main Street to begin building an academy for girls called Kirtland Academy which still exists today as one of America's leading women's colleges. In 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Union forces near Springfield while they were marching through town on their way to battle near Vicksburg, much damage was done including loss of many homes and businesses including that then current downtown core. The tornado outbreak that year resulted in widespread damage across much of Missouri but particularly downtown Springfield where many homes and businesses were destroyed or severely damaged. As Reconstruction ended following the Civil War, business conditions improved somewhat but remained difficult until around 1920 when oil exploration began increasing activity throughout central Missouri providing new opportunities for businesses such as those found in downtown Springfield which grew rapidly with more than 100 jobs created by 1923 alone! During World War II (1939-1945), large numbers of people from all over Arkansas came into central Missouri seeking work during the war effort; this led to an increase in both businesses and housing prices which continue into present day even though overall employment has declined since then especially Downtown Springfield although some recent efforts have been made along Broadway just east thereof! Despite these challenges though Downtown Springfield continues ongoing growth averaging almost 2 acres per year since 2000 despite being limited resources available! Today’s downtown core offers excellent shopping options as well as excellent atmosphere for dining out including several high end restaurants such as Benihana’s Japanese restaurant etc.; making it one stop shop for any occasion or vacation needs!

For many years he served as mayor pro Tem for Boone County before becoming its first governor in 1857 following the secessionist movement led by Major General David McLane."
