In 1872, Springfield's first store, the Fenton House, was opened. It was located on Main Street and sold goods such as groceries and notions. A few years later, a man by the name of John A. Stevenson erected a sawmill on the banks of the Missouri River in what is now Springfield. The mill produced lumber for local homes and businesses. In 1883, an oil well was drilled in Springfield and production began at the Stevenson Mill. This led to increased demand for lumber from other businesses in town and new development followed. In 1903, a post office was established in downtown Springfield and mail service started betweenSpringfield and St Louis. The Stevensons built a large frame house on North First Street near modern day Union Station to serve as their headquarters during this time period. From here they directed business activities throughout central Illinois until their death in 1944 at the age of 98 years old. Today there are several buildings remaining from this era including the Stevenson Mill which still operates today providing jobs for many people; Main Street where some of Springfield's first stores were located;and Union Station whereMail service stopped after 1903

On December 12, 1861, while serving as a delegate from Johnson County to attend Council Meeting at Moline, Illinois, John Dixon died suddenly at home having suffered an seizure that had been preceding for some time. His wife Eleanor took careof him and attended to all his needs until he could be taken to bed where he expired without pain or concern several hours later according to records kept by his widow at her home in Lebanon before she died 6 months later on October 5th 1865 due primarily To complications From childbirth; however There are no records extant that would connect her death With Mr John Dixon’s death! Even though there are many inconsistencies surrounding this topic it does support That Mrs Eleanor did take care Of her husband After he fell Off balance & actually Died! George Washington Dixon first brought agriculture into central Missouri with his land purchases from other farmers near Rock Island ArsenalArea Ohio However it wasn't until he moved into southwest corner Greene County in 1847 that he started making money growing crops such as corn and beans along with raising livestock including cows, hogs and horses He also began developing homes for himself & developed what would become known As "Dixonville". By 1850 there were over 100 people living here with more coming every year From Arkansas through Kansas Territory Then finally Missouri When Union troops invaded Southwest Missouri On April 14th 1865 They encountered resistance At An early stage In Battle At Raccoon Ford Near where Great Falls Now Lies They repulsed repeated attacks With Losses For Their Own Troops Up To 20% Of Total Number Killed These losses led To President Abraham Lincoln ordering General James Nicolle To take Over operations For Confederate ForcesIn order To Save Our People& Property We Were Forced Out Of This AreaAt Which Time We Entered Into Union Service As ATown Although We continuedTo Say Ourselves As If It Was Still Cherokee Nation! After Being transplanted Here we Started Keeping Records Which Led Us To Know That We Are Springfieldians All AlongThroughOUT OUR HERITAGE!!!

In 1872, the city of Springfield was founded by Horace Greeley, an editor and politician from New York City. The city grew quickly and by 1880 had a population of over 100,000 people. In 1904, the Missouri legislature passed a bill creating Springfield's first school district and appointing John Prentice as its first superintendent. The district became one of more than 200 school districts statewide when Missouri became a state in 1907.
