Springfield is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri, located on the eastern bank of the Missouri River. The population was 67,593 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Branson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by General James K. Polk in 1836 as a trading post on what is now called I-270 east of present-day Springfield. When it became a town, it had only 1 store and 100 residents. The first school opened in 1840 and served grades K-12; by 1850, there were ten schools and 500 residents. In 1851, two steamboats brought settlers to what is now Springfield from Illinois; they laid claim to all that would become Springfield, including parts of what are now Kansas City and St Louis County (later MO). In 1861, during the American Civil War, General David Dixon's Union army passed through Springfield on its way to Battle Creek; most of the men who lived there then enlisted in Union forces or fled to Canada after being told they could not be taken back into slavery if they returned home. The original courthouse still stands today (built in 1868), although some alterations have been made over time such as adding an auditorium and new steps leading up to it (now used as parking). In 1870–71, when railroads were built through central Missouri Valley, Springfield became one of their stops because trains stopped at every stop along what is now I-270 just east of town limits: these days only occasional traffic crosses I-270 between downtown Springfield and northbound MO State Highway 51A/US highway 435 heading southward from KCMO & St Louis County into Arkansas (and vice versa). In 1873–74 when railroad tracks crossed Interstate 70 near present day Springdale instead of running concurrent with US Highway 231 just east of town limits like they did before (~1960), this changed things again because then people had more access to work elsewhere and no longer needed access to Interstate highways for transportation purposes – which means that you can actually see old tracks right next door to modern streets if you know where to look! The following year saw another big change when electric streetlights went live in downtown Springfield – until that point everything had been done manually using kerosene lamps! This led directlyto many inventions & improvements like automatic streetlighting we know today! Today's skyline includes several high rises dating back to when electric streetlights were first turned on: One such building is "The Ark" which dates back To 1909 & has been recently renovated with free parking available inside! Downtown also features a number Of small businesses lining Market Street which makes for great shopping district !!

Since the late 1990s there has been significant economic decline in Springfield, with its population down to around 40,000 by 2006.
