Sikeston, Missouri is home to one of the most important rifle stocks in American history. The town was founded in 1839 by Colonel John S. Polk and his son, General James S. Polk, as a military outpost on the banks of the Ozark River. The town grew rapidly because of its strategic location and its connection to the U.S. Cavalry Regiment stationed there. In 1846, General Polk donated land to create what is now Sikeston Park and named it in honor of his father.
