Sikeston, Missouri is a small town located in western Kansas that was once the largest slaveholding center in the United States. The town was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847 and became known for its holster industry. Holsters were popular among farmers and cowboys during the early days of American slavery because they allowed them to carry firearms without fear of being captured or killed. In 1858, Sikeston joined the Union as a result of the Kansas-Nebraska Bill, which repealed parts of the Missouri Compromise that had kept slavery in Kansas while allowing free men to own property therein. By 1862, however, it had reverted back to slave territory and remained such until 1865 when it seceded from Kansas and became part of the new United States of America. The holster industry in Sikeston began to grow rapidly after it became legal to sell handguns in Kansas. The first holsters made specifically for handguns were created by localsmiths and dealers who quickly realized that they could make more money selling pistols through retail than through manufacturing plants set up for producing other types of products. Sikeston, Missouri was founded in 1836 by Norwegian immigrants. The town became a post office in 1840 and a community in 1846. It was named for the then-university town of Sigtuna, Norway. Sikeston's first store was built in 1848 and the first school opened in 1850. The population of Sikeston increased from about 100 residents in 1850 to over 1000 by 1870. In 1914, the University of Missouri moved to Sikeston from Columbia, Missouri and the name changed to UI Kansas City before being renamed UI Kansas State University in 1981.
Sikeston, Missouri is a small town located in the US state of Missouri. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. Sikeston is part of the Hannibal-St Joseph Micropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered by Hannibal to the north, St Joseph to the east, and Ozark to the south. According to the 2010 census, Sikeston has a total area of , all of it land. The community was named for Captain John Sikeston who fought in the Mexican-American War and been awarded an award from Mexico for his actions against American forces on that conflict's frontier. Sikeston began as a small log cabin settlement in 1836 when four families moved from Jefferson County, Kentucky into what is now Sikeston Township. By 1840, there were 10 residents living in five log cabins on two miles (3 km) of open prairie west of present day town center. The first post office was established in 1841 with Wm Hurlbut as Postmaster; it remained in operation until 1853. In 1853, Mikail Jurasenko settled near present day town center and built a frame house which served as the first schoolhouse in town; this building still stands today. By 1880, there were twenty residents living in six houses on a half mile (1 km) wide plot of land east side of main street; these homes had wooden platform roofs and large front porch windowsills withitched eaves finished with gables or cornered brackets above them giving them a “ Tudor” appearance. On November 16th 1888 local farmers organized themselves into what became known as “The Improvement Company” to purchase 640 acres (250 ha) along Main Street between German Road and Railroad Avenue – this land would later become known as Townships I & II – this donation remains one of Sikeston’s most notable landmarks today! In 1902/03 another donation by George Warner enabled construction of a two story high school across from First Presbyterian Church which continues to serve students today; this new school closed its doors thirty years ago! 1960 saw an additional donation by Virgil Ladd which permitted erection of an addition onto Main Street church that still serves as home to our current High School administration offices! Today not only does Sikeston have its own hospital but also several businesses are located within walking distance including: CVS Pharmacy/Grocery store (on Main Street), hardware store (across from First Presbyterian Church), bank (at Vanderburgh Park Shopping Center), restaurant(inside First Presbyterian Church), doctor(Dr Edward Pappey Jr.)and dentists(Dentist Cecil Wexler and Dr Randall French). In 1990, following passage through United States Congress entitled "A Bill To Make No changes To The Indian Territory Law", 508 pages long and running almost 8 feet wide x 9 feet high,[2] Sikestone's incorporation into municipality took place on December 6th 1990 under section 5708a et seq., 52 U S Code § 2241 et seq., which read: "An act authorizing townships within Indian Territory" This Act gives township status within Indian Territory[3][4], allowszoning ordinances passed prior thereto without approval from territorial government,[5] establishes cemetery limits,[6] sets aside money for schools,[7][8][9] authorizes creation Of fire districts outside territorial boundaries,[10][11] establish road district authority over certain areas outside territorial boundaries[12][13], etc... Notwithstanding any other law or regulation theretoinherein or inconsistent therewith - all acts done herein shall be effective immediately upon passage thereof except those herein directed otherwise

Sikeston is located in the Ozarks of Missouri, about 20 miles north of Springfield. The town was founded in 1854 by a group of farmers who arrived from Holland and had to leave their homes due to the American Civil War. The town’s name comes from the Sioux word “siek” meaning “a place where there are trees.” Sikeston grew rapidly during the early years of its existence and soon developed into a small town with a population of around 350 people. It boasted a large white schoolhouse, two churches, several stores and restaurants, as well as a few residences. However, by the late 1800s Sikeston had started to decline as it became increasingly dependent on farming for its revenue. In 1870, it amalgamated with neighboring towns to form what is now called Springfield. By 1900, however, Sikeston had only a handful of residents remaining and its economy was completely changed by Prohibition which halted all manufacturing in Springfield because importation was then banned. The town went through another period of decline until it finally disappeared altogether in the 1920s when World War II brought new prosperity to Springfield.
