Sikeston, Missouri is a town located in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. The population was 12,412 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sikeston- Located in Randolph County, it is bordered by Lawrence County to the south and east, and by Osage County to the north. The town was founded on October 3, 1839, by James Suggs and others as a wagon stop on the Santa Fe Trail. The first courthouse in Sikeston was built in 1840. In 1846, the town voted to secede from Randolph County and become its own municipality. On February 14, 1850, it changed its name to Sikeston after General John A. Logan who had been killed while leading cavalry raids against Native Americans near that year's Battle of Horseshoe Bend. In 1860, when Confederate General Robert Ealey invaded Missouri during the American Civil War as part of his Western Virginia Campaigns, he turned towards Sikeston because it lay along his supply line for soldiers moving through that state into Arkansas Valley Campaigns later that year. On July 10th 1861 about 1200 Confederate troops under General Pemberton reached Tikeston from Lawrence County where they were awaiting rail transportation back to eastern Arkansas Valley Campaigns which had just ended with Union victory at Bull Run over Lee's army near Manassas Junction Kentucky... Pemberton's force then marched towards Scout Hill where they camped until nightfall before starting their march back downriver across Wakarusa River Bridge which they crossed about two miles downstream from their original encampment campground known today as "Old Scout Hill." After crossing Wakarusa River Bridge they marched southeastward for four or five miles until reaching what is now called "Horseshoe Bend" where their march terminated due to swollen rivers caused by heavy rains earlier in the day combined with high water levels caused by recent snow meltings... Unknown what became of these rebel troops who may have retreated upstream or returned home because there are no remaining traces of them today other than some scattered artifacts still lying around nearby including an old cannonball found recently within 150 feet of modern day Sikeston High School!

However, post-war poverty and decline have led to population loss over the past few decades. As of 2010 there were only about 20 residents remaining in thetownship; most of these are involved in farming or ranching activities.
