Sikeston, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks region of central Missouri. It has been called the "Gunsight Capital of the World" because it has been home to the world’s first gun sights since 1836. The town was founded by fur traders and their families who were driven out of Fort Robinson by Native Americans. In 1836, Captain David Ritchie erected a sawmill on the river at present- day Sikeston and began manufacturing rifles and pistols. He used his sawmill to manufacture sights for his weapons, which he dispatched to Great Britain for sale. At first, these sights were made from lead or brass, but soon they became known as “gunsight sights” because they could be seen clearly in any light conditions. Today, Sikeston is home to several businesses that facilitate the sale and use of gun sight products. The town of Sikeston, Missouri was founded in 1836 by Alexander Shields. The town was named for General John C. Fremont and the Creek Indians who fought against him during the Mexican-American War. In 1838, Shields donated land to the town for a school and post office. The first school building was built on what is now Fourth Street in Sikeston. It is reported that the teacher, Mrs. Halsey, taught classes from a log cabin while using an axe to chop wood for her classroom floor. In 1840, Shields donated another acre of land to the town for a courthouse and jail. The first courthouse was built on Third Street in Sikeston. In 1847,Shields donated another acre of land to the town for a cemetery and church. The first church building was built on what is now Fifth Street in Sikeston. Reverend Elisha Bemis officiated at the opening of the church on December 26th, 1847. In 1865, Mr., J., & Wm., Sons dynamited an old stone bridge over Elk River which had been washed away by floods during storms season several years prior. This event helped spur development in Sikeston as it allowed easier access to water supplies necessary for farming purposes not possible before when travelling by boat or wagon across river bed
Sikeston, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Jefferson County, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1835 by Col. George Armstrong Custer and his troops during their drive from Fort Osage to start an Indian war against Chief Little Bighorn. Sikeston’s name means “the place where the trees stand tall” according to one source. The community grew rapidly after Union General Ulysses S. Grant discovered it in 1863 while on his way to defeat General Andrew Johnson at Pea Ridge. Grants army passed through Sikeston on their march south and people soon began building up the town around what is now the old courthouse square. Today, Sikeston is a vibrant agricultural center with many businesses catering to its growing population of farmers and ranchers as well as its numerous tourist attractions including two golf courses, several museums, and an outdoor water park known as "The Water Park" which opened in 2001). One of Sikeston's most popular attractions is its annual Oktoberfest celebration which takes place over three weekends in October - one for general admission only! Other popular events include springtime fairs (March), fall harvest festivals (November/December), and Christmas markets (May/June). In addition to all these events, there are also periodic concerts by local bands or choirs as well as photo contests and other event offerings throughout the year!

As artillery began becoming more available and firing ranges became larger, it quickly became clear that rifles could be used for hunting as well. Soon after, crossbows were developed as another means of target shooting using bowsstrings instead of arrows. This led to the development of sights that could be attached onto handguns (and other weaponry) in order to allow them to fire accurately at moving targets at distances up to several hundred yards.
Sikeston, Missouri is a town in Scott County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1854 and named for John Sikeston, an early settler. In 1870, it became a county seat of Scott County. The first post office in Sikeston was established on January 3, 1854, by George Hinton with advice from the Council on Indian Affairs. The original post office building still stands today and is used as the library for nearby Scott Central High School. A courthouse was built in 1865 and served as both the court house and jail until 1883 when a new courthouse was built across the street from the old one. In 1902, electric light was introduced to Sikeston and other towns in Scott County by William Clements who had been appointed by President McKinley to study ways to improve transportation methods within America's cities while also providingLighting for rural areas which were usually dark during daylight hours. In 1918 construction began on what would become known as "The Harry Laughlin House" which would be headquarters of Southern Illinois Telephone Company (SIOC) until its acquisition by UTI Corporation in 1984-1985. The company moved their Headquarters to 235 N Main Street later renamed "Laughlin Plaza". SIOC continued headquartered there until 1982 when they moved back into downtown Kansas City after more than 60 years of operations there including 10 years as the primary provider of phone service to city residents without having their own line! In 2006 IUPUI announced that they were purchasing Northwestern Bell's phone services within downtown KC and all future buildings will becomeIUPUI facilities; this included Laughlin Plaza becoming home to ICTech Services Incorporated! Today Sikeston has many businesses that contribute significantly to its economy including: several restaurants and cafes such as Pizzeria Uno Bella Italian Restaurant & Pasta Shop - opened in 1995 - Two Creek Casino - opened in 2004 - Steeve's Ford dealership since 1978 - many small shops located throughout town including: Smiths Clothing Store (owned by Mary Smith since 1924), Sheridan Hardware store (since 1908), Jensons China Doll shop(since 1912), Carlisle Drugs store (since 1907), Rheingold Shoes store(opened 1886) among others
Sikeston is a small town in the U.S. state of Missouri, located northeast of St. Louis on the east bank of the river Lee. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sikeston City-County School District. The first known permanent settler in Sikeston was Nicholas French in 1811, and he named it after his father's home near Quebec, Canada. French built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Frenchtown". A post office was established at Frenchtown in 1816, and remained in operation until 1847. In 1821, Captain James Ketchum discovered rich coal deposits near present-day Sikeston and offered to sell land to anyone who would settle there. In 1824, David Humphreys bought some land from Ketchum for $1 per acre ($38 today). Humphreys renamed his settlement "Sikeston" after himself and donations from other settlers encouraged by Ketchum's offer soon grew into an incorporated village with a population of about 100 people. In 1830, organizers met to establish a school district that would include all of Crawford County including Sikeston Village (then just north of present-day Sikeston). On February 11th 1830, this organization became the first school board in Crawford County when Adam Posey organized nine members from three families: Posey family #1 (David Posey), John Shafer family #2 (John Shaffer), and Cornelius Goodnow family #3 (Cornelius Goodnow) to serve as trustees for the new school district which included present day Sikeston Village as well as parts of Higgins Township and German Township within its boundaries; these trustees were elected annually throughout their terms with no term limits so that they could continue serving until death or retirement occurred; poseys served two terms (1830-1831 & 1840-1849) before moving on to become mayor of Indianola Springs where he continued to serve until his death in 1865; james ketchum donated one acre () to form what is now called "Ketchum Park", which still includes portions of original Dutch trial ground where Captain James Ketchume mined coal during his days mining hereabouts
