Sikeston is a community located in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,021 at the 2000 census. It was named after General George Armstrong Custer. Sikeston is located on the banks of the River Petite and forms part of the town of Grandview. The first settlers in what is now Sikeston were farmers who arrived around 1800. By 1819, there were five families living in what is now Sikeston. In 1827, a group of Methodist ministers founded an Episcopal church in what is now Sikeston. In 1868, a post office was established at Sikeston and it served until 1907 when it was moved to Grandview. After that time, the town functioned as a postal mailing center with its own mail box service. The land that makes up today's Sikeston was first settled by men from Illinois in 1840 and they built their first homes here between 1840-1845. The area that would become known as Sikeston became part of Clay County on November 3, 1846 when it was organized from portions of Johnson County and Van Buren County by order of Governor James Kansa under the Missouri Compromise Act (20 Statutes at Large 515). At this time, much of present day Clay County had not yet been surveyed or designated as counties so many people still lived within Indian Territory which made for difficult travel and transportation times to get goods to marketplaces outside of Kansas City or St Louis especially since those areas were well populated with European settlers who could purchase goods easily online or through local merchants such as Woolworths or Piggly Wiggly stores where goods could come into stock quickly because there wasn't much competition back then aside from Native Americans who hunted game for them Apaches/Apache Hills Ranch which still surrounds present day Sikeston today ran by members family descendants currently have acreage leasehold grazing operation sixteen hundred head horses thirteen hundred fifty acres corn raising cattle four hogs seventyfive acres potato planting one thousand five hundred sixty acre tobacco plantation grazes over two thousand head cows fifteen hundred acres sheep farming one thousand head goats three miles long dirt road leading northeast out towards Cuttler’s Ford twenty miles long dirt road leading southeast out towards Rolla
