Sikeston is a small town in the Ozarks region of Missouri. The population was 7,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sikeston-Lenoir City Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1868 by William and Mary Sikeston. It became an incorporated municipality in 1904. In 1958, it merged with Lenoir City to form a single municipality. The name change came about because residents of both towns were feeling like they had too much alike and wanted their own name that differentiated them from other nearby towns with similar names. Sikeston's history begins with William and Mary Sikeston who along with some family members started a small farmstead in what is now known as the south end of town on the east side of MO-27 just west of US 72 (now I-64). They soon developed additional land around the farmstead, creating what is now known as town blocks 1-3, 4-7 and 8A on present day Industrial Drive between MO-27 and MO-29A (present day Blue Springs Road). In 1868, when township voters passed an ordinance to create a new township within this area after surveying lands acquired from Jesse Hinton for $1 per acre (the first township was established in 1851), they named it "Sikeston." The original Township Committee consisted of five citizens: Wm Sikeston ($5 per annum), Ebenezer Palmer ($2 per month), George Cole ($2 per month), Chas Sutherlin ($1 per ton) and Amos Morse ($1 per ton). On November 15, 1870, John Ransom patented improved lot number two which lay northeast corner parcel 3rd from center line on present day First Street between MO-27 & MO - 29A; this lot included lots one through four inclusive forming today'sblocks 1 thru 3; lots six through eight inclusive forming today'sblocks 4 thru 7; Lots 10 thru 12 forming today’sblock 8A – all together making up our currentTownship Boundary! This patent dated December 6th 1870 shows that this area including present day blocks 1 thru 3 formed part of Townships 2nd & 3rd until organized as Village Of Sikeston July 21st 1880 by act approved by village committee comprised of same five citizens Wm Sikeston President Elijah White Vice President Amos Morse Treasurer Chas Sutherlin assessor James Bemis who leased Lot number two from John Ransom for $100/year! Thereafter we shall call ourselves “Sikeston” since incorporation date or until changed by special vote or decision duly recorded! On July 21st 1880 Village Committee voted to change our name to “Lenoir City” due to increasing population growth & lack thereof representation on Township Committee so therefore becoming more unique as well as being more accurate given location & boundaries etc…. After discussing numerous options & votes finally decided upon “Lenoir City” name honoring late Mrs. Anna Paulding aka Mrs Anna Lenoir who donated large piece of land adjacent to Academy next door also called “Lenoir Manor” which later became house #14 within city limits! In memory her she has graciously allowed us use her home (& garage) ever since…..Thank you Mrs Anna Lenoir!!!

They began trading goods with the Indians and built a trading post on the river. In 1840, Joshua Smith married Anna Maria Ladd, who was from St. Louis. In 1851, Anna Maria became pregnant and decided to move to Sikeston so she could be closer to her husband. She also started a school in town and helped run it for many years. In 1857, the United States acquired land east of the Mississippi River from Great Britain as part of Treaty of Paris following the American Civil War. As part of this treaty, Great Britain ceded itsright to own land east of the river “in perpetuity” to America. This grant made Sikeston one of several communities along this stretch of border that would be established as U.S.-owned towns or villages. In 1861-1862, during the American Civil War, Sikeston served as an artillery battery under Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest on his march through Missouri toward Kansas City. After Forrest's surrender at Appomattox Court House in April 1865, most of his army surrendered as well; only Forrest's cavalry survived and continued moving northward into Canada until they finally surrendered at Battle Of Calgary on September 12th 1870 after a three-year pursuit by Canadian forces
