The first settler in Sikeston was John Sigourney in 1824. The town was named after Captain Alexander Sikeston of the United States Revenue Cutter Service and his family who had emigrated from Scotland. Captain Sikeston supervised Native American Trade on theMissouri River and helped to populate what is now Iowa, Illinois, and Kansas. He also founded an early printing press in Sikeston which published newspapers during the mid-19th century The town's first post office opened in 1829 and remained open until it closed in 1865. Many men from throughout Missouri responded to this call with applications to join units fielded by Missouri Governor Patrick Quinn at Springfield Armory . 2nd Lieutenant John Wittell applied for membership but did not receive a response so he started work on his own rifle company at nearby Harper’s Ferry Wittell left his Rifle Company assignment before it could be completed and returned home to Sikeston where he organized another rifle company under Captains John Hodge and James Birdseye The companies foughtaboriginal skirmishes against Confederate forces near Poplar Bluff through November 1862 before being ordered back east due to lack of troops . In late December 1862 both companies were mustered out of service with Wittell returning home after spending two months recuperating from wounds received at Poplar Bluff In 1865, General Order No 11 called for all males age 21 or younger to serve in any branch of military including infantry cavalry or artillery if they resided within three miles of any fortifications manned by Federal troops . This order led to many young men from around rural Missouri enlisting into Federal army Units such as 3rd Regiment Arkansas Infantry (St Joseph), 5th Regiment Kentucky Infantry (Harrisonburg), 5th Regiment West Virginia Infantry (Aiken), 9th Regiment Indiana Cavalry (Jefferson City) etc... After serving their required time they were honorably discharged with no punishment provided
