In 1838, John Smith discovered silver and named the area "Skins Landing" after his discovery. Polk moved his army across the river to attack Confederate forces at Cairo (now Springfield). When they reached Sikeston they diverted their path so that he could not march through it to Cairo. As a result of this diversionary action, General Polk's army lost many men and supplies and failed to achieve its objective. In 1865, after much discussion between local officials about what would become of Sikeston proper with no consensus reached about what should be done with it given its strategic location on both sides of the river - including on opposite banks - President Andrew Johnson ordered General Samuel J Fillmore to take possession of all property within two miles of any Ulysses S Grant military encampment near Columbia (now Jefferson City) because Grant had threatened to move his army into central Missouri if such an order were not royalized immediately. fillmore chose instead to sell off some land in present-day Kansas City for $5 per acre which raised $25,000 for war purposes without having to abandon any homes or settlers in town or upstream on the Kames River; this action helped keep Sikeston alive as a stopover until finally becoming an abandoned community again following military occupation in 1867 by Union forces under Major-General Ulysses S Grant while Pillow's Mill burned down - leaving only trees standing today above waterlogged mud flats long past any hope for salvaging anything from beneath tonnes Of silt & rubbish accumulate over years since then...
