Sedalia is a city in Sedalia County, Missouri, United States. The population was 21,652 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sedalia County. The town has been home to Sedalia's first commercial development and its first school, which were both built in 1872. The first weapons used in Sedalia were spears and flintlocks. There are records of an Indian battle that took place in 1796 and it is thought that early settlers brought rifles into the area around this time as well. In 1831, a company of gunners from Fort Scott served with General Andrew Jackson during his campaign against Native Americans in what is now Cherokee Nation. In 1861 Colonel John Custer went on Expedition No. 5 along the Kansas-Oklahoma border and brought back over 26 guns for use by Confederate forces fighting against Abraham Lincoln's America Civil War efforts; these guns were later melted down for reuse within Union forces during Reconstruction (1865-1877). In 1865 near where he fought at Palo Alto Depot some 50 miles west of Sedalia there was an accidental fire that destroyed much equipment belonging to Armstrong & Co., a wagon dealership located just east of downtown on State Route 24A today known as Ferguson Avenue North (now part of I-435). One account suggests there may have been up to 100 people present when cannonball hit storeroom roof killing several employees including Captain Hargrave who had managed ammunition deliveries for garrison troops stationed at Fort Riley since Indians had begun raiding local settlements in late 1851 or early 1852; storeroom contained munitions which stored under floorboards behind counter’s shelves while goods being unloaded from wagons parked nearby burned; next morning when Captains Hargrave discovered bodies & property damage he immediately reported situation to major Genl Wm Jordon commanding military district #4; Maj Schofield responded by ordering all stores closed butArmstrongs remained open until repaired overnight 8/10/1862 after heavy rains caused flooding inside storagerooms Investigation revealed no criminal intent or knowledge on part of anyone handling munitions anytime before 0700 hrs 08/11/1862 therefore no accident

A streetcar line called "The Red Carpet" ran through town between1872-1875 providing transportation for residents to various business locations outside of townlimits
