Sedalia, Missouri is a city in Sedalia County, Missouri, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sedalia County. The town was founded in 1836 and named for General Anthony Wayne Sedalia. In 1870 it became the capital of Kansas Territory; it was moved to Topeka in 1907. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Sedalia County in 1836 when they were driven out of their land by Native Americans. However, it wasn't until October 3, 1839 that a group of twenty-six men led by Captain David Brown crossed the Arkansas River into present-day Sedalia County and began to build a log cabin on the site of what is now downtown (now known as Old Town). They named their new settlement "Sedalia" after General Anthony Wayne Sedalia who had led America's final victory against Mexico at Palo Alto on October 1, 1847. In 1870, when Kansas Territory was created from parts of Nebraska and Iowa, Topeka became its capital andsedalia became its municipal center with 5 residents – three blacksmiths (Samuel Garrison and Daniel Garrison), one tailor (John Fenton) and one shoemaker (Edward Gifford). physical changes since then have been few: small businesses have transition from sharecropping to manufacturing because there has been no need for large machinery or large markets for products; schools have evolved into modern day universities; however social mores remain largely unchanged due to historical constraints such as lack of integration or opportunity within local communities during times when those constraints existed
