The first white settler in Sedalia was Nicholas "Nick" Reeves who arrived in 1814. In 1837, Daniel Boone came to this land and founded a log cabin near present-day Sedalia. This was also the location where he first traveled downriver to what is now Kansas City. In 1870, James Sutherlin built a sawmill on the Arkansas River south of town. In 1912, Jens Jensen opened the first store in downtown Sedalia and began selling groceries and farm supplies from his store until he closed it in 1981. In 1970s and 1980s, several small businesses operated around downtown: a bakery called Eve's Bakehouse & Café; an auto mechanic shop by the name of Bill's Garage; and Joe's Pizza Place which served up pies made with dough from local loaves of bread that were baked at home daily by Joe’s father before they moved into their current building on Main Street in 1984. The closure of these small businesses led to increased street homelessness due to lack of customers or space for new businesses onVeteran Boulevard which runs through town center (now Elm Street). As more people started moving out of Sedalia during the late 1990s and 2000s recession, some residents turned to using commercial properties as homes or makeshift dwellings due to limited zoning/property restrictions that prohibited development near public transportation stops or schools. However, many residents have since regained hope for revitalization after seeing efforts being made by city officials to redevelop Veteran Boulevard into a mixed-use corridor with retail/residential uses along one side while preserving open space on the other side for parks and enjoyment by citizens and visitors alike
