The town was founded in 1854 by Jacob Riess and his family of German settlers. They named their community after Sedalia, Illinois, home of another early German settler, Johann Friedrich Sedgwick. In 1876, the Riess family sold the town to George Sells and his nephews for $2 million. The new owners changed its name to Sedalia in honor of their purchase. Today's sedaliians are descendants of those who first arrived here in 1854-55: Jacob Riess' grandson Reuben Fenton Riess and his wife Lucy were among the original families; Reuben's brother Nathan also settled here around this time (1856). Nathan had married Abigail Freeman Smith from Independence Township east of Wichita Falls (then spelled Hiawatha), Texas; they eventually had six children – three boys and three girls – all born in Sedalia. The following year saw yet another settlement made by Germans when John Muehlberger came over with his family from Steubenville, Ohio on horseback looking for a new home after leaving his previous one (the Muehlbergers would become well known as ranchers and farmers in this area). He reached Sedalia on July 1, 1857 and found an open lot near what is now Third Street between Cassius Drive and Broadway streets just waiting to be developed into a village or town center! Incredibly enough it only took him two years to come up with a plan for developing this land into a thriving community! he called it “Muehlerville” which later became “Sedalia” thanks to Mr. Sells! It wasn't until November 15th 1870 that citizens finally got together to create their own government under the State Constitution established that year! This event marked quite an important milestone not only because it formally gave Sedalia its own legal entity but also because it demonstrated how much these pioneer settlers loved their place – they wanted everything done through democratic processes instead of relying solely on older leaders like Isaac Neely or David Wohlheimer who had been instrumental in creating/leading the earlier settlements hereabouts! Over time many other towns & villages sprang up throughout western Kansas & eastern Missouri due largely to immigrants coming across our state line seeking work opportunities & advancement… which brings us back nicely to our subject today: sedalians!
