Thisenterprise became one of the most successful in town and rapidly grew into an largest department store in central Missouri before closing its doors for good in 1966 due to competition from larger stores opening up around town. One such competitor was Sears Roebuck & Co., which had opened its first mall location outside Chicago just two years earlier and quickly began expanding into other markets across the United States including Kansas City and Omaha! In 1969, Sears retired from business operations within the town limits after more than 150 years! It wasn’t until 1978 that another major retailer entered the market when Home Depot Corporation bought Safeway Corporation’s entire presence within Townsquare Shopping Center adjacent to I-435 southbound off Interstate 64 – becoming one of only two companies ever to operate both large shopping center anchors simultaneously within municipal boundaries!
