The first modern gun targets were invented in 1918 by George Wessels, a German immigrant who moved to Sedalia and started making targets out of woven wire. In 1951, the city of Sedalia incorporated as a municipality and began issuing city-issued rifles and shotguns. Today, there are over 100 recreational Gun Targets located throughout Sedalia, with many open to the public from 9am to 5pm each day.
