The first white person to come to Sedalia was George Denny in 1839. He also built a store and post office there. In 1852, he married Jane Randolph and started an agricultural business that grew into Sedalia's largest employer until 1906 when it merged with an other agriculture company to become Monsanto Foods Incorporated. In 1907, he moved his business to Topeka and died there four years later; Jane continued running the firm until her death in 1924. For many years before World War II (1918-1945), Sedalia was one of Topeka's most active manufacturing towns with heavy production of munitions and related products for both military use during World War I and wartime output during World War II. By 1945, however, majority production had shifted to Wichita because of lower labor costs in postwar America relative to Europe or Japan where war industry had been centered earlier due to technology advantages over Britain or Germany).
