Sedalia is a small town in Sedalia County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Farmington-Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1856 by Landon and Nancy Knight. The first gun slings were made from cotton twine and used to sling live ammunition over a shoulder to be fired from a rifle. Sedalia was founded in 1836 by German immigrants and has been an agricultural community since its founding. The city became a center for manufacturing after World War II and now has a strong economy based on health services, retail commerce, and professional services. Sedalia is home to the Sedalia-Clearwater School District and several private schools. The city's history began with the arrival of German settlers in 1836. At first they were farmers who grew corn and beans on their property near what is now downtown Sedalia. They named their community "Sedalia" after nearby Seddonville which they thought resembled "Seda," or "salt water." Over time other Germans arrived, some of whom had come to Independence (then Clay County) to join General Nicholas Harker's Cavalry Department during the Mexican–American War in 1847-48. These newcomers brought with them their skills as farmers and craftsmen; some built mills while others started businesses like cigar stores, wagonmakers, saddlers' shops, breweries, flour mills and cheese factories. By 1861 sedalesians formed a nucleus around which many other families moved: most notably those from Holland Township (now Dellwood), just north of town along I-70; from Springdale Township (now Webster); from Manchester Township (Now Gladstone); from Elkader; from Bloomfield; from Lebanon; and from Weldon Township (later Clearwater). In 1865 Captain John Fenton established Fenton & Son Lumber Co., one of the early successful lumber companies in Sedalia As Sedalia grew into an agricultural center it turned its attention to hogs but soon found itself unable to keep up with demand caused by fur trade competition among Canada, Mexico and United States interests all vying for control over resources such as buffalo robes being shipped downriver to New York City markets In 1892 local businessman William Joplin organized what became known as the ""Joplin Land Company"" which acquired 1 million acres east of town on Laclede Creek for $2 million dollars ($ when measured against current values). This purchase made Sedalia one of America's largest land acquisitions ever However despite this recent addition to city limits sedalesians continued struggling through tough times: bad harvests caused food prices to spike while internal strife among friends led many families away for greener pastures outside town In 1932 Mayor George Wozniak Parks merged two rival school systems - Clearwater School District No 4 becoming part of the new Sedalia Schools system while Oak Cliff HS went back intoprivate hands within Clearwater School District No 2 However although these moves helped improve relations between city government officials and citizens alikesedalsians still struggled through tough times: bad harvests caused food prices to spike while internal strife among friends led many families away for greener pastures outside town Finally starting in 1967 new mayor Neilson Dixon ordered all public works projects budgeted at $5 million be reduced due primarily to Milliken Plan economic recession . Although this decision did not result in widespread famine or famine-like conditions throughout that year it did lead To increased tensions between Mayor Dixon's administration staff over how much money various programs were costing taxpayers without any corresponding benefits promised thereby leading eventuallyto father David Dixon's ousting as mayor late that year

The land that became Sedalia was first settled by German immigrants in 1836 and named for Nicholas von Sedan who had come overland from Germany two years before. A post office called "Sedenia" was established in 1841, and remained in operation until it was closed by the Postal Service in 1906. The first school in Sedalia opened in 1846 on what is now Main Street. In 1865, a Methodist Church was built on what is now Hwy 141. A Roman Catholic church (St Joseph's) was built on West Main Street between 1861 and 1863, and served as the town's only religious building until 1903 when a new black church (Pinecrest) also served as its sole building. In 1870, a millinery shop and dressmaking store opened on Center Avenue east of present day State Highway 141 north of town limits. This store continued to operate until 1938 when it burned down due to fire code violations. In 1902, the railroad reached Sedalia and began to bring people into town; soon there were several stores along Center Avenue selling goods produced by the railway company such as clothes, furniture, hardware and other items. When World War II broke out in 1939-1940 more people came into town; some worked for the war effort while others bought munitions from local suppliers across the country or even from Nazi Germany itself because there were no restrictions placed upon American civilians buying military supplies within their own borders during wartime times like this one had been since peace times! When peace came back around 1945 things gradually slowed down again with few jobs opening up after the war wound down: instead most people returned to their pre-war routines except for a handful of businesses that thrived during this time including an auto parts dealership which still operates today! A smallpox vaccine factory operated out of what is now Old Hag’s Pharmacy off Ulysses Road starting 1948 but ceased operations due to poor health conditions following multiple outbreaks throughout Wichita County just prior thereto caused by active wild boars! sedalia got its name form territorial dispute between Des Moines & Springfield over which city’s “ settlement” (now City Park) would be given first use – Des Moines claiming ownership via maps dating back to early 1800s while Springfield considered itself “the original Settler Town” owing mostly to contributions made by General George Armstrong Custer circa 1860! finally settling eventually went through without any quarrelsomeness however both towns received plaque/tribute commemorating event(s) at respective locations beginning about 1990!
