It is a medium-sized city that lies on the edge of Sedalia Township and the eastern edge of Johnson County. The boundaries of Sedalia are east to west and north to south. The downtown area contains many businesses and shopping areas as well as public buildings such as the Sedalia City Hall and county courthouse. The Webster Groves neighborhood extends into neighboring Johnson County to the east and North Kansas City to the west. The history of Sedalia stretches back before European settlement began in this area. A group of Native Americans called the Mississippians lived here for centuries before migrating southward during the 18th century. In 1798, French traders arrived in what is now Sedalia after exploring this area while traveling through Indian Territory on their way from Louisiana to Arkansas. They named this place La Salle because they saw white marble there which they thought resembled saltpeter (salt). Spanish explorers also explored this area during this time frame but no settlements were established until 1815 when members of Captain James Kieft's party discovered a location called Cahokia Landing on Cairo Bayou about 20 miles southwest of present-day Sedalia via an inland route known as Old Fort Road. When Kieft's party reached Illinois he decided not to pursue his journey further upriver but return home via Cahokia Landing where he built a trading post for goods arriving from Illinois waters. In 1817, another group led by John Cargill explored what is now Johnson County with intentions of developing it into land grants or selling it off to settlers. However, they did not find any valuable resources here so they abandoned their search after only spending a few weeks here. This was followed by an era characterized by little exploration or development in this part of Missouri due largely to 3 factors: 1) lack of interest among settlers due primarily to high rates offered for land compared with other parts 2) difficulty finding transportation across these rugged terrain 3) difficulties getting water available despite numerous attempts Eastern Kansas City grew rapidly during this time period while sedalian residents generally remained relatively stationary or moved away when opportunities arose outside their community limits

Sedalia is a city in Sedalia County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,914 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1839 by John C. Frémont and his wife Lucy as a small farming community named "Bellefontaine". In 1861, Sedalia was renamed Bellefontaine in honor of General Andrew Jackson's first wife Betty Bellefontaine. The town grew rapidly during the mid-19th century as a result of its location on the newly formed Kansas–Nebraska Railroad. In 1870, Sedalia became an incorporated town and developed into one of the largest cotton plantations in Missouri. However, it declined during the Great Depression and lost most of its economic significance after World War II. In 1969, Sedalia moved from its original downtown location to a new municipally-owned development that includes several dozen high-rise buildings completed between 1978 and 1984. This redevelopment has brought about significant changes to Sedalia's economy and infrastructure; for example, it has helped increase access to education and job opportunities for residents while preserving much of its historic district which has been designated a National Historic Landmark.
Sedalia, Missouri was founded in 1837 by Nicholas Moore and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for Sedalia, Illinois, the original home of the Moore family. The town's first store opened in 1838. In 1870, theMoore family donated land to the town for a library. The Sedalia Board of Education meeting held on December 5, 1872 approved the donation and naming of the library after Judge John Swayne who had represented Sedalia on the Missouri Supreme Court from 1871-1875. In 1902, engineers designed and built the first electric streetlights in Sedalia.
