Sedalia is a small town in Sedalia County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,554 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Sedalia was John P. Ferguson on May 15, 1825. The town was platted on October 25, 1837 by Wm. H. Ladd and James A. Cline under the name of "New Salem". It was named for the family sedge that grew thereabouts. The post office opened in Sedalia on November 3, 1838 and changed its name to "Sedalia" on December 12th of that year. On January 12th, 1840, a schoolhouse and gristmill were built in Sedalia by George Peake and David Hogg as part of a plan to create public education in the area; this became one of the most important features of the town until it closed during World War II when all schools were closed due to wartime shortages of materials. In 1850, Isaac Sargent settled in what is now Sedalia with his wife Nancy and their six children from England; he founded an agricultural colony which eventually expanded into present day Illinois (the original settlers had come overland from England). The early years of Sedalia's growth were not easy - despite good soil for agriculture (specifically limestone), few people located here because transportation was expensive and difficult to come by; nevertheless they persevered through cultural changes brought about by frontier life: horseback travel became less common as railroads arrived; whiskey began becoming available statewide (and then more available locally) which caused entrepreneurs such as Silas Benton to start distilling products such as corn whiskey specifically for Sedalia's needs; also new churches were built throughout the area which contributed greatly to community spirit along with other citizen initiatives like building a water tower/pump station which helped bring electricity to town during prohibition times!
