Sedalia, Missouri is an unincorporated community in Sedalia County, Missouri, United States. It lies on the east bank of the Ottawa River and on the west bank of the Kansas River. The population was 2,834 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit Sedalia was Captain James K. Polk in 1846 while he was searching for a route to California. He named it after General Nicholas Hixon's home town in England, Sedalia (now Jackson). In 1851, Wm. H. Sibley founded a sawmill here and began cutting lumber for local schools and buildings. The town quickly grew into a small but thriving community with several stores and homes. By 1859, when Sedalia became an incorporated village under Act of Congress No. 992, its population had reached 100 residents; by 1863 it had grown to 200 residents and by 1870 it had reached 300 residents! In 1870-71 Colonel John Troup built a dam across the Ottawa River that created what is now known as Park Rapids Lake; this made possible irrigation of nearby farms and allowed Sedalia to become one of the leading cities in America! In 1895, $2 million were raised through statewide promotion efforts to improve transportation infrastructure in order to increase trade between Sedalia andKansas City; this led to increased business opportunities for Sedalia businesses such as banks and grocery stores which attracted new customers from those larger cities! In 1922 (or 1923), when Wichita Falls was founded just upstream from Sedalia on the same river bed as Park Rapids Lake, many settlers relocated there because they found jobs available at Wichita Falls' steel mills! Settlers arrived from all over Missouri during this time period: Illinoisans in1860-62; Germans in1864-66; Scotsmen (Highlanders) in 1888-90; Irishmen (Famine refugees)in 1912-14; Italian Americans arriving starting around 1920s - these people came mainly via railroads! Because so many people moved here during these years, there are numerous streets and other landmarks that bear witness to some of our most memorable moments or events throughout our city's history! At various points throughout its history – dating back more than two centuries – Sedalia has been called "the cultural capital of America", "The Gateway Town", "The Heartland Shangri-La" due largely to its vibrant arts scene which continues today - thanks both to its annual ArtPrize competition which attracts top talent from all over America each year as well as its large number of festivals & events every summer!!!
