Sedalia, Missouri is a city in the county of Sedalia, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first inhabitants of Sedalia were the Shawnee Indians who lived along the banks of the White River during various stages of their history. They were displaced by white settlers in 1813 and had to leave their land. In 1836, General James K. Polk founded a new republic called Missouri Territory which included all present-day Sedalia County and some parts of Kansas City County. In this new territory, he named his town after himself, George Washingtonsedley in honor of his father-in-law and namesake. On January 20th, 1840, George Washington sedley married Maria Lacy on a farm near what is now Topeka Boulevard and State Street in Sedalia Township; they would have six children: two sons (George Washington sedley & Samuel), three daughters (Maria Alice Lacy & Henrietta Cowles), and one son (John Quincy). The city was incorporated as Sedalia on December 3rd, 1868. The original town plat shows that it consisted of a single block with five buildings—a courthouse square between Main Street and State Street on the north side; an Indian agency store on Delaware Avenue across from there; four churches—oneMethodist on Elmira Road east of Main Street; one Baptist west of Main Street; and one Catholic church southbound at Maplewood Drive about midway between Main and Delaware streets.) On July 10th 1870 US Congressman Charles Wickersham filed for incorporation as Topeka Township but no action was taken because he did not have enough signatures to make it an official township. On October 9th 1870 Wickersham submitted petitions for both townships and failed to receive any response so he withdrew both petitions without having made anything formal yet – these were just preliminary steps until finally he became territorial governor in November 1870 when Territorial Act No 6 went into effect creating Topeka Township with its own government including its own sheriff’s office etc.). However there was still no growth within either town so topographer John Sibley started surveying land for a new city charter using money donated from local farmers so that by 1872 there actually existed two towns viz., Topeka & Sedalia proper with only 1/3 acre surveyed each! Finally on December 12th 1872 main street opened up between State & Elmira Streets becoming home to most people living within those boundaries as well as businesses that wished to locate within those limits or nearby like Griggs Drug Store just northwest cornering STATE STREET) Today we can see evidence that this street once united bothsedale &Topeka Townships together while also coming down river valley cutting right through today'sTopekaboulevard separating them even further! w/o topographer Sibley’s surveyor’s mark this street would be much different today) Map courtesy OFA
