The first settler in Rolla was Abram Ellis in 1836. By 1860, there were five families living in Rolla: Fenton, Greenleaf, Horseshoe Bend, Logansport and Smith. rolla post office opened on October 24th 1861 with Elisha Purdy as Postmaster General. Thurston Waring built his house on what is now Main Street in 1875 and named it after himself; he also donated land for a school which opened in 1876 and still stands today known as Waring Hall School. From 1889 until 1893, when it became part of St Francois County, Rolla served as the seat of government for both St Francois County and Osage County In 1907 Rolla had a population of 2200 people; by 1912 that number had increased to 2600 due to growth in agriculture and ranching during World War I In 1940 Rolla had an estimated population of4000 citizens; by 1945 that figure had decreased to 3000 due to World War II-related effects such as commuting into larger cities and rural areas Since 1960 rolla has been home to one high school which serves all grades from Pre-Kindergarten through Twelveth grade along with other related educational institutions including a vocational center rolls community hall was dedicated on November 10th 2006 by Premier Kathleen Sebelius

Many of these men had been farmers before coming to Missouri. By 1820, most of the original residents had either died or moved away to other parts of the country. However, others decided to stay and start a new life in what was then anUncle Sam land claim between Baltimore and Philadelphia counties in Illinois Territory (now Missouri). Most of these men were Baptist minister's sons who wanted to found their own church colony after watching England's religious revolution unfold during the Napoleonic Wars. They named their new settlement "Rolla" after General James K. Polk's home state of Georgia where he served as Governor from 1845-1849.
