Rolla is a small town in eastern Missouri, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. Rolla is part of the Springfield-Keokuk Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first inhabitants of Rolla were Native Americans. The first European to visit Rolla was Captain John Smith in 1763. Rolla was founded by James Caldwell in 1811 as a trading post on the Eastern Branch of the Kaskaskia River. In 1827, Caldwell sold his holdings to David Hull. Hull began developing Rolla into a prosperous farming community with large stores and homes. In 1865, an act of Congress created Pulaski County, including Rolla and all of present-day east MO., and designated Hull as its first county clerk. In 1870, when MO statehood became effective, Hull donated land to build what is now the University of Missouri–Kansas City campus;Rolla residents voted to become citizens of MO in that year's referendum. After years of growth and development at UMKC, Rolla tax base reached $200 million by 2000; however today many rolls are still conducted through mail from residents who still maintain strong ties to their home town and its businesses (eGroups such as "Rollaaaners" have been formed specifically for this purpose).
