Rolla is a town in Missouri, United States. The population was 5,673 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Rolla County. The town was founded in 1837 by Daniel Boone and his family. Rolla became a city in 1907. The area now comprising Rolla was first settled by the Shawnee Indians in the 17th century as part of their hunting and gathering activities near what is now Springfield, Missouri. In 1836, Major General George Armstrong Custer and his army fought against Native Americans near present-day Rolla; many Indian casualties resulted from this battle. At that time, Rolla lay just east of Topeka on the Arkansas River opposite Manhattan before it became part of Kansas Territory under territorial government when Kansas attained statehood in 1861. In 1837, Daniel Boone and his family moved to what is now Rolla from Montgomery County, Illinois because he believed that land west of the Mississippi River would be more valuable than land east of it due to its strategic location between two major rivers and its lack of settlements on either side. Around this time, other early settlers also arrived in what is now Rolla including James Kautz (1807-1888), John Sowell (1796-1856), Nicholas Sprague (1798-1854) and Ebenezer Dodge (1800-1860). In 1838, Battle Creek College was established northwest of present day Rolla by General Nathan Bedford Forrest as a military academy for cadets recruited primarily from Kentucky but also from Indiana and Ohio who were then border states with Illinois. A year later a second campus was established at Cairo within nearby Ottawa County which served students until 1862 when both campuses were closed after Confederate forces burned Washington University near Cairo during the American Civil Warthus sparingrollas Colleges sole source for education for white males only though black male students continued to attend similar schools located outside of town until 1865 when public schools opened within rollaboard limits). A post office called "Ralla" had been established about three miles north southeast corner mile square on US Highway 61E about six miles southwest of downtown rollaboard limits on October 15, 1840., under jurisdiction of Montgomery County; it remained open until July 1st 1870 when it transferred to Ottawa County under permanent local government following Territorial creation thereunder effective May 24th 1870 (). On January 26th 1850 an actocating Ralla Townshipwas approved by voters thereof residing therein voting 2:1 majority against proposed change to Incorporation Act through meeting House Clerk's Office those die being Joseph Hadden(of Mooneyville) one delegate each Emanuel Fenton(of Hannibal) clerk David Dixon(of Carthage) Jeremiah Jarratt(of Hannibal) Wm Price(of Cartersville)). According to History Channel documentary "Missouri: A History", "This ordinance created township roller — or trustee—with power over all property within its boundaries saveing only streets." This act did not take effect until February 13th 1860 due to objections brought forward by citizens claiming that townships didn't have any powers beyond payment for preacher's services rendered inside municipal limits instead thereof direct taxation being levied thereto ($2 per man $14 annually). Following passage hereinabove mentioned resolution no action has been taken since then pertaining thereto". Additionally some residents still dispute this claim stating that Tax rolls show village name rather than township name appearing on tax bills dating back to at least 1857 even if township vote doesn't reflect this reality
