Rolla, Missouri is a census-designated place in Douglas County, Missouri, United States. The population was 3,829 at the 2000 census. As of the 2010 census, the population was 4,409. Rolla is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Rolla's history dates back to 1872 when Hemanus Sprague founded an agricultural station on what is now known as State Route 7 near modern day Rolla. Sprague named his new town after himself and his wife Eliza Rolla (née Macurdy). In 1892, Rolla was established as a city by act of the legislature following a referendum vote by residents. In 1907, Rolla became one of three original cities within St. Louis County when that county was created from portions of Douglas and Platte counties. The remaining two were Independence and Chesterfield which would become St Peters in 1911 respectively In 1916 Rolla annexed unlawful sections of Hannibal which had seceded from neighboring Hannibal Heights Township since that township's incorporation into Rolla in 1903 less than two years before On November 6th 1920 rollas citizens approved an ordinance annexing all unincorporated areas east and south of US 71 including those lying within present day rolling hills northeast and southwest of I-70 exit 229B .
