Rolla was founded in 1853 as a stagecoach stop on the old Hannibal route. The town grew rapidly, and by 1870 it had become the largest town in this part of Missouri. At that time, Rolla had two stores, four churches, and thirty-six residents. In 1875, Rolla became the site of the first municipal election in Missouri. That year, Rolla also became home to the Springfield Armory Company, which produced firearms for military use. In 1907 Rolla was incorporated as a city. By then, its population had reached over 1,000 people. In 1916 Rolla annexed the neighboring village of Senterville (population: 100). This annexation made Rolla one of only a few cities in Missouri to have both rural and urban boundaries. The years following World War II were tumultuous for Rolla.
