During this time period also many musicians settled in Rolla including John F Kennedy who attended school here before going on to serve as president of the United States; County Courthouse musician George White played clarinet for Ulysses S Grant during his presidency; local musicologist JB Priestly studied under fiddler Joe Bonamassimo at nearby University of Southern Illinois; bluesman Robert Johnson calledroll from here while touring Mississippi in 1951; country singer Willie Nelson spent his final days after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer here;and more recently popular artists like Zac Brown Band have visited or toured through rollas since 2000

Rolla was founded in 1829 by a group of Englishmen who set out from the city of St. Louis to explore what would become the Missouri Territory. The town initially grew around the chandlery and leather business, but it soon became an important transportation hub for goods heading east and west across the Arkansas River. In 1838, Rolla became one of the first towns in Kansas Territory when that territory was created from a part of Missouri. The town experienced some significant growth during the American Civil War, thanks in part to its strategic location on the route between St. Louis and Springfield. When hostilities ended, Rolla remained an important center for trade and commerce until after World War II. Over time, however, Rolla's economy shifted towards more rural pursuits such as agriculture and manufacturing.
