Rolla, MO is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 809 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO-IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Rolla was founded in 1896 by General James W. Rolla and named for him. The first settler in Rolla was John Hancey, who arrived in 1876. He and his wife Esther raised four children in the town. Hancey died in 1920 and his wife continued to live there until her death in 1951. Other early residents included William Tatham (1875-1953), JF Howe (1877–1965), George Ahern (1879-1963), and Charles Bowers (1881-1968). In 1898, General James W. Rolla founded the National Guard armory here to provide defense against railroads that were building through Jackson County. The armory closed in 1907 but it reopened as a grocery store called Mrs Born's Store later that year. In 1922, Mrs Born donated land to rollers for a new high school which opened on December 1, 1923 under the name of "Missouri State Normal School". The school closed after just one year due to lack of enrollment; however, it reopened as Rolla High School on December 10th of that same year with new buildings built by local philanthropist Ora Fenton Weilandtke A new football stadium was built adjacent to Missoulian High School campus starting play fall 2006 using $10 million from private donations and state funding The current home field of Rolla University is Memorial Stadium which opened its doors on September 17th 2006 and seats 6,500 people It was also announced that a new business park will be located within walking distance of Memorial Stadium rolledaleMo
