His daughter Clara married George Silliman (1860-1929), who served as mayor of Springfield from 1915 until his death in 1929; his son Joseph Silliman (1920-1991) succeeded him as mayor during World War II before becoming Ulysses S Grant Professor of American Studies at Washington University Press in St Louis where he still teaches today Rolla experienced two major tornado touchdowns on Saturday night/Sunday morning 3/3/2007: There were no injuries reported following these storms but many homes were destroyed or damaged making it one of the most destructive tornadoes ever recorded within Missouri or any state east of Kansas City!
