In 1881, Republican Party members organized a convention to nominate James Kossuth for President against Andrew Johnson and they nominated him instead. At this convention, Republic became an affiliate member station with St Louis AM radio station KPLU-FM (now KCUR). In 1903, republic merged with neighboring town Belmont to form a new community called Belmont-Republic which continued to operate until it disbanded in 1957 due to merging restrictions set forth by FCC regulations governing FM radio programming at that time
