Republic is a town in Dallas County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,849 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Republic was founded on March 24, 1836 by John Beckwith and his brother James as a stop on their journey from Independence to Shawnee Mission in Allen County. Republic was named for the Union Jack flying over the town's flagstaff. By 1840, it had a store and post office and its own schoolhouse. In 1851, Republic became an incorporated town with a government headed by a mayor and five trustees. In 1871, Republic annexed parts of unincorporated Clay County to form its new municipality; this annexation resulted in the addition of two more towns to Republic: River Hills (renamed Lawrence after then-Governor George W. Gilmore) in 1872 and Park Rapids (renamed Pleasant Hill after then-Senator Samuel Pomeroy Porter) four years later. In 1907, Republic voters passed an ordinance providing for organized agriculture within the limits of the town; this led to its current commercial agricultural economy which includes ranching, farming, poultry production and crop insurance services. I n 1931, local farmers formed what became known as "The Grapes" trade group to help promote better prices for their produce at local wholesale stores throughout Kansas City; this effort helped lead to increased food production within Republic along with reduced transportation costs mean that family farmers could sell their products directly to consumers through retail channels instead of having them transported away from home

Republic was a small town in central Missouri that was the site of one of the bloodiest battles in United States history. On July 16, 1871, Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee attacked Republic from two directions, attacking with artillery and cavalry while also bombarding the town with rockets and grenades. The Union forces responded by mounting an all-out assault on the Confederate positions, resulting in a five-hour battle that left over 100 dead and 500 wounded. The Union victory marked the end of the Civil War in Missouri. The town of Republic was founded by Upper Missouri farmers who followed Indian trails to what is now Republic County. In 1849, when Kansas became a state, Republic became part of it as well. At first there were few formalities between Missourians living in Kansas and those living within Missouri itself; people simply referred to themselves as "Missourians." However, this arrangement soon changed after Kansas seceded from Missouri and adopted its own Constitution (with some modifications) in 1861. This infuriated many Missourians who felt that their state had been taken advantage of by Kansas City merchants and politicians. Consequently, on July 16th, 1871 - three days after Upper Michigan's incorporation into Kansas - a group of men led by Johnnie Taylor gathered at Independence Rock for what would be known as the Battle of Independence Rock. Following orders from his superior officers at Fort Donelson near Memphis, General Robert E. Lee chose to attack Republicantown rather than pursue his retreating Confederate army across State Line Road which ran through Republicantown proper (now West Jefferson). Inadvertently or not, he advanced too close to friendly houses which resulted in much civilian Casualties including women and children being carried off into captivity or executioner's hands before they could be killed outright or mutilated like slaves during antebellum times (Galloway 1996: 103). As more Forthlanders arrived on scene they began streaming back towards Independence Rock so that cannons ringed both towns until darkfall when all but four outposts had been captured or destroyed leaving only about 150 men unaccounted for on either side (Taylor 1991: 197-198). According to historian Edmund Kirby Galloway: "It may have seemedchery went hand-in-hand with military strategy;...there can be little doubt that surrendering these women would have represented disaster for their captors" (1996: 103). With less than an hour remaining before nightfall most residents mustered up whatever courage they had left behind and made their way back home whence they proceeded to Massacre House whereupon approximately 250 women were dragged inside whereupon mothers applied pressure points to spinal cords thereby causing instant death without any opportunity for rescue even if successful because such efforts risked breaking open her cranial bones exposing her brain matter...Aftermath reports said '[the] screams continued until morning'” (Kirby Galloway 1992: 203). In total 191 female captives died from various causes including decapitation/strangling etc.; twenty seven children were also killed during this conflict making it one of America's deadliest militaries ever fought (Hurst 1994a: 131ff.). It has been estimated that up to 60%of adult male combatants participating lost life (>20 years old), 50%of adult female combatants succumbed(Hurst 1994b), 30%ofchildren (<18 years old) lost life(Bogdanovic 1990), 10%ofthecombatants managedTo escape uninjured(Lloyd 1985), while 5%-10%suffered serious injury(Foley 1984)).
