In 1839, Republic, Missouri was founded on the banks of the Missouri River. It became a thriving town and shipping point for goods arriving from Illinois and other states. For example, in 1902, amateur astronomer Edwin Hubble discovered that there is an entire galaxy far away from Earth! And in 1923, he discovered what we now call "The Great American Eclipse." These events helped make Republic known as one of America's leading scientific communities. Republic also played a significant role in optics during World War II. For example, when Nazi Germany began their assault on France, they turned their attention towards England instead-and many optical equipment stores were utilized by the military to build telescopes and other tools necessary for astronomical observation. Additionally, many key documents related to artillery range management were produced from data collected by scopes within Republic during WWII.

Republic was founded in 1837 by Daniel Boone and his party of surveyors as a salt lick on what is now the Arkansas River. It grew rapidly due to its location and easy access to water supplies, especially during the days when Branson was an important stop on stagecoaches between St. Louis and Baltimore. In 1840, Republic became a county seat with voting rights for all residents over 21 years old. The first sheriff of Republic was named Samuel Hays elected in 1840 after serving two terms as justice of peace for Hancock County. In 1851, it became one of twelve counties established in present-day Missouri by constitutional amendment passed by voters in a referendum laid down in Article V of the United States Constitution which granted voting rights to all citizens over 21 years old regardless of residence or wealth within any state except Kentucky and Texas (the last being admitted shortly thereafter). The first courthouse in Republic was built about 1840 on land donated by David Moulton, who had also donated land for training purposes for Confederate forces retreating from Fort Sumter during the American Civil War. A new courthouse was added to the west side of town around 1865 following authorization given by General Order No. 9 dated January 10, 1865 concerning "salvation projects" throughout America undertaken under authority vested in Majestic General Ulysses S Grant commanding military forces stationed at Port Hudson River Plantation near Baton Rouge Louisiana Territory then included much portions eastern Tennessee including republic including parts now known as Putnam County Indiana Territory On October 1, 1892, Congress passed an act providing that "all towns having populations over five thousand are hereby declared eligible for incorporation into cities", making Republic one of just four towns (along with Quincy (IL), Topeka (KS), and Wichita Falls (TX)) accepted into Chicago's city limits without vote or discussion from their respective town halls . On November 5th Mayor John Fenton petitioned Illinois State legislators claiming that since he had been mayor for more than six months without any major decisions made about how City Hall would be used - especially since top ranking officials were either leaving office or retiring - Fenton believed himself qualified under state law to make such decisions unelected . On December 6th Assistant State Attys Andy Beauregard filed suit challenging this decision stating that he could exercise executive power since he held title as mayor while top officials were unavailable . According to records kept by City Hall through March 30th 2009 it appears Fenton's claim may have been successful as no action has been taken against him since then despite attempts from Deputy Manager Jeff Marrison ..... The current Mayor Jeff Marrison took office on July 1st 2009 after John Fenton resigned effective June 30th 2009

The city was named for the United States Constitution, which it ratified on April 6, 1837. In 1840, Republic became an independent republic with a government made up of elected officials rather than royal officials. In 1861, when Confederate forces invaded Missouri, Republic surrendered without resistance and became part of the Confederacy. The city lost much of its population during the war but remained an important commercial and industrial center until after 1865 when it gradually regained its independence status. In 1870, Republic merged with neighboring town Independence to form what is now known as Independence-Republic City
