In 1828, Rev John Blair began teaching classes at the new schoolhouse on Main Street. By 1830, Republic had a population of about 25 people. Barton donated land to support a gristmill that would be built near Constitution Avenue and Independence Road; this mill continued to produce flour until it closed in 1908). In 1832, Republican Elijah Woods set up shop as an auctioneer at nearby Clayburgh Auction House; this business continued until 1861 when it merged with local storekeeper Amos Brown’s store to form Union Auction House (later renamed Liberty Auction House). In 1840, Republican James Polk erected a large sign reading “Free Soil Democracy” outside of his home on Elm Street; this sign still stands today (it is currently displayed at the Gallatin County Courthouse). In 1865, Democrat Abraham Lincoln visited Republic while campaigning for governor against incumbent Simon Brenton; during his visit he stopped at Citizens Bank on Main Street to cash some checks before traveling northward into central Missouri.) In particular, The Dickenson Hotel Museum is particularly well-known for their collection of vintage advertising materials from local businesses such as Mooney’s Bar-B-Q and The Post Office (a building that now houses several shops). This museum also features interactive exhibits about Republic's early days including displays on local artifacts such as old maps and pioneer homesteads.
