The first laser sight system was developed in the early 1960s by Science and Technology Associates (STA) for use on LAW ( Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission from a Laser) rifles. This system used an antenna to send light waves directly to the target, allowing commanders to engage targets with greater accuracy than with traditional sighting systems relying on other means such as eye blinking or looking through a telescope. In Republic, Missouri, one of the earliest laser sights systems was introduced in 1967 when Bob Schieffer purchased a Laser Sight CompanyUSA ticket-scanner system from Northrop Grumman Corporation. The patent application for this device was filed in 1966 and was granted in 1969. The original "Schieffer" Laser Sight system consisted of two small neon tubes which were mounted on an armature that rotated around an axis which accelerated the electrons shooting out of the tube towards the target. When hit, these electrons created a spark that illuminated the target and allowed soldiers to fire accurately at long range without having their shots bounce off various objects in their vicinity

By 1984, red dot sights had become standard on most firearms and their usage had spread internationally. Green laser sighting technology has since become less common due to its high cost compared with other types of sighting systems, however some rifles still feature green lasers today (for example certain M16 rifle models).
