On November 3rd, 1898 local farmer Daniel Boone defeated James Fenton Keyes for election as Mayor of Republic. Boone became the first black man to serve as mayor in America. He served two terms before resigning due to health reasons on May 8th, 1902. In 1904 Union Carbide Company donated 2 acres (0 hectares) bordering on Republic city limits for a new chemical plant; this site would become one of the most important industrial sites in Missouri Valley during World War II and later become home to Monsanto Co., Inc..
