Gun Swivels have a long and varied history in Republic, Missouri. In the early 1800s, gun swivels were used to adjust the sights on firearms. Some of these guns had elaborate design features that required special swivels. By the 1860s, most handguns in Republic were designed with breech-loading firearms which necessitated magazine followers or other means of adjusting the position of the firearm's barrel for best accuracy. The first rifles in Republic were built in 1857 by Captain John C. Fremont and Company using Indian moccasin bullets as their projectile. Rifle barrels were bored out to accept shot cartridges and then swiveled about a pivot point to achieve desired sniper rifle elevation without having to remove or replace the entire barrel. A small number of these rifles still survive today at various museums across America. In 1868, Fenton Arsenal was founded in Republic by Colonel George Taney and his son-in-law Drury Waddell Jr.. The Arsenal produced artillery rounds that utilized black powder instead of metallic cartridge cases which necessitated new types of swivel sights for use with those rounds. This provided an opportunity for gun manufacturers throughout Missouri to produce their own sights designs specific to their products while also enjoying increased market share due to competition from rivals within their own states and elsewhere within America. By 1902, most handgun production in Missouri had switched over to revolver manufacture; however, rifle manufacturing continued until approximately 1912 when it too came under control of handguns fame when Colt introduced its standard Model 1911 rifle into town square markets throughout America. The town prospered until the American Civil War, when it lost its status as a small cattle and wagon post to Missouri. Republic continued to prosper during Reconstruction (1865-1877), but declined thereafter due to lack of population and resources. It lost its luster as a business center in the 1920s, and has since been abandoned.
